After I got over the initial shock of turning 40, I shook off the ropes of fear and set out to make the rest of my life fabulous.

To do that, I needed to tackle the most important thing: health. As a subcategory, one word kept coming up: inflammation.

That’s when I knew what to do, and so I’m sharing it with you. 

Those who follow me know that I talk about inflammation a lot, and for good reason. We’ve got it! It affects our health and ability to enjoy our lives! But most important of all, each of us can take steps to manage and control it and celebrate our body temple. 

As a woman who passed her 40th birthday several years ago, I think a lot about inflammation and how to keep my body, mind, and spirit in balance. It’s a topic that is clearly on the minds of the many women I speak with and coach, so I’d like to explore it for a few minutes with you now.

Here’s the thing about inflammation: you stub your toe, it becomes inflamed, your cells do their healing work, the inflammation goes away. But the other kind of inflammation—the hidden, persistent kind that runs throughout the body affecting cells, tissues, and organs everywhere and causing health problems and disease—that’s the kind of inflammation we’re talking about.    

Chronic inflammation is not good at any age, but I see 40 as a turning point. That’s when perimenopause is on the horizon, and hormonal changes are beginning to take hold. It’s the time we need to realize we must pay attention to all the things that contribute to chronic inflammation, including unmanaged stress, poor nutrition, lack of sufficient sleep, exposure to toxins, and dehydration. Why? 

Because chronic inflammation is associated with serious issues that can impact your body temple, such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, asthma, obesity, and more. If you want to live the rest of your life to the fullest, it’s time to focus on restoring and reviving the body temple.

I mentioned the word “celebrate” earlier, and I want to return to it now. You can beat chronic inflammation and the health issues that can come with it if you vow to honor your body daily with some simple yet powerful habits. I have embraced them and the results are amazing!

Avoid inflammatory foods. Every time you nourish your body, you can do so by offering it healthful foods that don’t promote inflammation. I recommend you significantly limit or completely avoid processed foods as well as red meat, dairy, grains, legumes, and certain vegetables (nightshades: tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, bell peppers). Instead, feast on whole (organic when possible) foods, including all other vegetables, most fruits, nuts, seeds, healthy oils (coconut, avocado, olive), chicken and turkey, cold water fish (e.g., tuna, mackerel, salmon, herring), sweet potatoes, and coconut products (water, kefir, yogurt).

Get plenty of sleep. A lack of sufficient sleep (7 to 8 hours every night) promotes inflammation. When your body doesn’t have time to restore itself, the inflammatory process can run rampant. 

Practice self-love. This category is wide open, so enjoy yourself! The point is that you need to take care of and love yourself before you can love and take care of others. Personally I have many different self-love habits, and you should chose those that fit into your life. Some examples include daily affirmations, yoga, massage, walks in nature, taking time to engage in a hobby, dry brushing, journaling, meditation, oil pulling, and singing. 

Manage stress. Many of the ideas under self-love are excellent ways to help manage stress in your life, whether it is from your job, relationship, children, school, or other events or circumstances. It’s also important to realize that talking and sharing with other sympathetic or like-minded individuals can be an effective way to get a clearer perspective on the stress in your life and then find new ways to deal with it, like we do at Divine Renewal.
